Getting to know "The Unbroken White" from WSA Fashion Design students

“The Unbroken White” is an exhibition which present the collection from postgraduate fashion design students and artworks from textile design students of Winchester School of Arts. The main concept of the collection is to be sustainable in designing every garment. All of the design in this collection are zero waste. We interviewed 3 students from MA fashion design students.

Evelyn Wang & Katrina Qiu

Firstly, we interviewed Evelyn Wang, Katrina Qiu. Both of them are postgraduate fashion design students of Winchester School of Arts. They exhibited the garment on “The Unbroken White” collection. In their mind, “The Unbroken White” is associate with sustainability, and zero waste, because of using whole white material and can not waste any material. When we talked about their process of producing the garment, they thought that was difficult to use only one fabric and only one colour to design it. Although it was difficult, but they suppose that sustainability could protect our environment efficiently.

Evelyn had the inspiration from “Thorn” when she designed the garment. “I saw the photo was talking about the desert and plants, I thought its live is really strong, so I use this concept to show the vitality.” said Evelyn. For Katrina’s design, she said that folded tangle is an easy way to reduce waste and design a garment. Therefore, she decided to this concept to present her design.

Lyn Lu

Next, we met Lyn Lu, who is also a fashion design student. She mentioned that all of garment in this collection used the same material called Tyvek, is similar with the material of paper. She talked that she had inspiration from a piece of paper at the first. She found that If we cut the paper, it will be like tassel hang down over there. So she did different kind and different shape of samples. Finally, she chose two different cutting method and shapes to made her garment. However, she had some problem with her initial idea.

“At first, I wanted to cut my garment by laser cutting, but I found that was not suitable for my garment.” she said. Therefore, she decided to use knife to cut the fabric carefully by herself to make her garment.

Susu Chen

The third interviewee was Susu Chen, who is also one of the designer of the unbroken white collection. Susu mentioned that all of the design in this collection are zero waste, every material must be used in their design, which is a big challenge for a designer. She also mentioned two perspectives from a designer and in the whole fashion industry, as a designer, it is no doubt to have a much lower cost in making a garment, but for the whole fashion industry, it will raise the awareness of sustainability for the public. Talking about her design, the biggest inspiration was from the ocean, the reason is that she watched a video that a group of people hold an event to clean up the ocean, so when we talk about sustainability, “ocean” had pop up to her mind. The whole garment is made of different shape of rubbish bag, and the details of the wrinkle is inspired by the wave on the ocean.
